Exceptional Golf Lesson
Do not settle for anything less
I have jumped to the present day and have decided to talk about this exceptional golf lesson without boring you with the stages on how I have developed it. I have absolutely no hesitation in calling this method exceptional. 99% of golfers have never been given awareness and concentration exercises during a lesson. So I just can't lose. I challenge you to ask your pro or coach if he can guide you on how to improve your awareness and concentration skills when playing or practicing. He'll probably give you quite a blank look and then ask you to be more precise.
Tell him that you read an article about Tiger Woods that states, "His concentration and awareness levels are so finely tuned, he can see his club head and ball quite clearly at impact." I had heard of many sportsmen who had the ability to heighten all or any of their senses and used to think that they were super human. But these are again just cases of using fine concentration and awareness skills. With a little practice I can also achieve some of these sensory wonders. Blind people have highly advanced senses of hearing and smell; and deaf people see and feel things in ways that a person with all the senses intact has a problem understanding.
Now here is my exceptional golf lesson, and it's a great awareness and concentration exercise. I call it "Seeing the Line". I ask my students to stand opposite me when I am hitting a few balls and ask them if they can see the line my ball draws as I strike it. I do at this point discuss the long line that you can see in a photograph made by a car's lights as it zooms past at night.
As they concentrate on my ball they begin to see anything from a blurred white streak a couple of inches long to a vivid five foot long streak. After no time everyone can see something falling between these two descriptions.
I then put them to the test and ask them if they can see a line when they are hitting the ball. I have already demonstrated to them that I can see this quite clearly during my demonstration. This exercise is much more difficult and I hear many groans with feedback like, "I was so busy trying to swing correctly that I forgot to watch for the line." I then tell them, "Forget everything except the line. Results are not important, just try to stay awake for the millisecond it takes to see the damn line."
This lesson is all about awareness and concentration and when my students start to 'see the line' - that's when the magic begins to happen. They start to hit the ball much better, they see clear lines that they can describe vividly and some can see the compression of the ball at impact. I could and will be writing much more on this theme later but for now I think that is enough to be getting on with.
