It's Gene Sarazen

We Must Thank

Gene Sarazen was famous for inventing the first heavy soled wedge which he designed for splashing balls out of the sand.

But he is also famed as being one of the elite five who has won all four majors. He graced the early version of the PGA Tour with a damn near perfect golf swing and he was also renouned for his total disregard of the study of swing biomechanics.

I think he epitomised Harvey Pennick's "Rear back and hit it" attitude to swing thoughts in tournament play and I think he is a great advocate for the theme of this page, the quick fix.

A quick fix is basically a new swing thought/idea and has a very short life. As a matter of fact it will normally expire within three rounds of golf.

During the first round it can work wonders and we can hear ourselves uttering something like, “I’ve definitely cracked the secret of the golf swing this time.”

On the second round although it still works to a certain degree we are beginning to realise that doubt and disappointment are starting to emerge.

On the third round that same thought, which was almost being hailed as a miracle, has lost all of its magic and will be discarded like all the others that have passed before.

The part I find hard to understand is we live our golf lives in search of the next idea and never seem to realise that we are doing something wrong.

We will find another one and before we can stop ourselves will exclaim loudly, “I have found the magic move at last.”

I think it is quite sad that we live in search of the next quick fix, lasting fix, permanent fix, perfect fix, or any fix at all. And try to experience it for one and a half to two rounds, and then wait until the next one lifts its head above the horizon.

Oh come on, waken up!

As Gene Sarazen would advise, a quick fix does not work, it is always going to let you down and with it you will find yourself back in your hacker hell once again.

I honestly believe that we enjoy the illusion created by them so much that we forget the real pain they cause. I for one have ignored them for years and will continue to do so as I have realised a very peaceful playing state without them.

I do however always have a specific swing thought and will remain with it until I know it has become instinctive or reflexive.

I will not leave it because it does not seem to be working anymore. As in doing so, it would then fall into the catagory of a quick fix.
