Golf Enjoyment
Who really gets this!
- Golf Enjoyment - Putting these two words together doesn't seem to ring true. I personally play the game with an 'enjoyment' theme as my main goal and know many players who think that they play with similar goals.
They seem to be enjoying the before and after, but not the actual playing experience. At least not to the extent that it should be enjoyed.
I hear it all too often: "Well that's ruined my score" or "I really should give up this damned game"
I ask these same players what their game plan was and, 99% of the time, it was performance related.
Wouldn't it be refreshing to hear some enjoyment or learning related goals:
"I want to play as many holes as possible today where I am enjoying the game and am not numbed with the usual fear I feel during a bounce game, match or medal."
or
"I would like get to know my playing partners a little better during the four hours we are together."
And enjoyment is just that ...
Why is it that a golfer takes up the game of golf in the first place? What causes one player to work so much harder, more efficiently, or just perform "better" than another?
All things equal, it's down to enjoyment.
Enjoyment answers the "What's in it for me?" question. It gives players the motivation they need to do more. Enjoyment can include:
- Being recognised – as a good player or pleasant partner.
- Coping with challenges.
- What one can get out of the game.
- Developing concentration skills.
- Developing performance levels.
All of these can create a scenario where a player, given the proper general environment, will take his knowledge, skills and abilities and apply them in ways far beyond normal expectations.
