World golf statistics

Now that I find very interesting

I enjoy reading golf statistics. Like how many players in womens golf have a single figure golf handicap. Statistics with plenty of golf information and golf terms like plus 4 handicap and the like.

It has always been an interest of mine to create a table of statistics relating to handicaps. I contacted many of the world golfing bodies to find out if such a system exists anywhere so that accurate global statistics could be published.

A few years ago I stumbled across a German website that has already developed such interactive charts. They cover both male and female golfers of every possible age group. It even publishes your exact ranking at your own club and also your national ranking.

There are 650 golf clubs in Germany with 500,000 golfers who make up approximately one per cent of the world's players. I have compared these statistics with a selection of golf clubs, in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, who have cooperated in this study.

I have compared the results from both and was quite surprised that the various statistics showed up very consistantly across the board. In fact, in the biggest indisgression between them, there was only a six per cent difference. I am of course looking deeper into these figures but am delighted reveal the following statistics:

Forty per cent of all golfers have a handicap higher than 30 or don't have a handicap at all. (That's 20 million of you).

Only four per cent of all golfers have a single figure handicap or better. (That's 2 million of you).

Ten per cent of all single figure handicappers or better are juveniles under 18. (That's 200 thousand of you).

The largest group of single figure handicappers or better come from the 40-50 age group.(Probably because there are more of them and they also play more often).

From the 2 million golfers who have a single figure handicap or better, 90 per cent are male. (That's 1.8 million of you).
