To stay or not to stay in the present?
That Mr. Shakespeare is the right question.
The skill of being able to stay in the present is very important for learning, enjoyment and performance. "And why?" I hear you ask ...
The answer to this is rather easy. Everything we do in life can only be done in the here and now. As in ... I tried to learn that yesterday (past), I am enjoying myself now (present) and I hope to perform well tomorrow (future).
And herein lies the reason why golfers progress rather slowly if at all.
I witness it every day during my private lessons. My students are almost only in the past and future during the run-up and aftermath of their swings.
Because of this I have changed my teaching priorities to ensure that my students can achieve improvements in learning, enjoyment and performance criteria.
They must learn be present to the here and now to do this and that's my new priority during all of my coaching sessions. I now ICE all of them at the start of each and every session.
- I (intention)
- C (commitment)
- E (evaluation)
