The Practice Swing!
It's a waste of energy.
So why do playing professionals rarely take a practice swing?
I have heard many different answers to this, like their not needing to or having superstitions about such a thing.
I have my own opinions on this and as always I have based them on observations taken from other sports or activities. So I will get straight to the point and state the following:
A full blooded practice move is a very unnatural thing to do. It's a senseless waste of energy if you think about it.
Let me explain. When a tennis player serves he doesn't make a big swishing practice move first or when receiving doesn't make a full practice forehand manouvre. He'd be exausted before long.
Or in the simple act of throwing a bunch of keys to someone, a full practice thrust would be something that would never be considered. Try it if you like. It just feels plain stupid.
So why do golfers do such a thing when in all other sports or activities it just isn't neccessary or conceivable?
Well it goes back to getting your first lesson which leads to the unnatural way we practice and play this game. Be that from a coach, your father or an uncle telling you to take a practice swing and then to try the same with the ball.
And then you are told that your practice move is much better than your actual swing with the ball.
Well of course it is, with the practice you are swinging and sweeping the club through the grass and with the ball you are trying to hit something. Two different swings, two totally different manouvres.
On another page I will be discussing how the latter could be performed like the smoother former mentioned swing.
I rarely take a full blooded practice and never take one on the golf course.
