Let us firstly consider a few points before getting started with this lesson. Nothing compares to receiving this session head to head, because no matter how well I explain this wonderful concept, a one to one, would create better, swifter results. I have however strived to make this as personal as possible and have tried to consider every possible question and answer that has, up to now, arisen. I am looking forward to sharing this concept with you and I thank the scope of the World Wide Web for making that possible. Up to now this concept has only been practiced by a select few, who have experienced brilliant results, and I now want to share it with you. |
Let's get started! The initial task to be carried out in 'The Best Golf Lesson in the World' seems so easy to do that you'll wonder why you didn't think of it yourself. It is nevertheless a very important step that must be taken to achieve more remarkable results. So what is it? You simply have to look at the target for at least 75% of the time during your pre-shot routine. |

Welcome back! I promised my daughter Leela last year that if she could awaken her body in this way she would achieve power and accuracy beyond her wildest dreams. I wish I, as a grown-up, had the same naiveity that God bestows on children. She has almost instantly added an amazing 30 yards to her already remarkable 170 yard drives and she just turned 12 recently. It frightens me just how long she will be by the time we are finshed tapping into nature's reserves. So come on, return to your childhood, and switch off your analytical mind. If this lesson can almost instantly add 30 yards to a 12 year olds drives, then what can it do for an intellegent adult? Take a look at the following video where you can see that I have alerted my body to its task and have, during this short spell, tapped my natural reserves. |
Please notice that I have not taken a full practice swing but have made a couple of small waggles. I am trying to prepare for a very smooth take-away and endeavour to initiate a smooth transition into the downswing. These two parts of the swing are without doubt the most important factors and I am going to improve your awareness of them. This will of course lead you to swinging using a more extraordinary method.

Adopt a perfect Pre-Shot Routine
Consider this!
Why do most sportsmen adopt a pre-shot routine where they fall into a peaceful state and spend most of their time looking at the target and golfers do not? Let's take tennis as a medium to answer this observation. Watch a tennis match on T.V. and you will see a player going through a pre-shot routine before every point (be that as server or receiver). Although they all have slightly different routines, there is such a similarity that it could be said that they are copying each other. The most important point here is not the fact that they are copying each other but that the television coverage includes these routines. Because of this when I watch amateurs playing tennis, they also have very similar routines to the top professionals. This holds true for every other sport and this has much to do with the television coverage. |
The only part of the game where amateur golfers have similar routines to the pros is putting. It is quite obvious why this is so, as the coverage of this is quite extensive. We all tune in for the final round when the leaders are coming down the stretch and we are witnesses to a feast of live putting, pre shot preparation included. In between these putts, the coverage flashes to another player who has an approach to a green and we then manage to catch him a split second before he swings to fire the ball at the target. As this is all that the public see, then it is no wonder that they adopt a stance at the ball in a frozen state for 5-10 seconds before swinging. This topic is to be continued |
The concept of swinging with your awakened body is not new. Many professionals practice this but have not been able to pass it on. It could be said that they won't, can't, or are not quite able to. You will now learn what Shivas Irons (Golf in the Kingdom, by Michael Murphy) called ‘True Gravity’ and Bobby Jones explained as 5-10 mph faster than the natural force of gravity. 'True Gravity' is, in layman’s terms, the force (speed at impact), between two masses (club head and ball), the distance the club head travels (the swing), and most importantly how these ‘effects’ are enhanced by a player (how any extra energy is applied to the natural force of gravity). 'True Gravity' or optimum gravitational force is applied when these ‘effects’ are added proficiently. (I do not claim to be an expert in the laws of physics and to all experts in this field, please forget the normal law of gravity as I am talking about 'True Gravity' relating to the golf swing.) Some would say it is to do with centrifugal force and others centripetal force. I say it doesn't really matter because the subconscious doesn't get too concerned about the scientific explanations. |
If you have ever been to a professional tournament you will have noticed that many of the players have a silky, almost laughable smoothness to their swings. In fact, it's only when you look at the resulting ball flight that you realize they are doing something we don’t. Or to put it another way, we are doing something they don’t. Sufficient points have now been made and the lesson can now begin. You are going to learn how to swing with less conscious involvement.
What? Shall I pass that by you again!I know you are a reasonably laid-back person who does not want to hear anything too complicated but this isn't as weird as it sounds. For example, ask that finger to wiggle and you will notice that there is an immediate response as it already has a neural connection to your brain. You will now discover how to accomplish similar silky skills like the professionals using the conscious mind and the mind finger. For those of you who possess an unorthodox grip (I will be addressing later) it may be a different finger in this hand that is giving the most feedback. It could be the thumb, index finger, etc. It is in any case important to block out and silence any feedback that is coming from elsewhere. Good, you are now ready to feel 'True Gravity'. |
So go on, transport your conscious mind into this finger. And as it does not have a protective skull, your brain cells will be highly exposed to the slightest variations of pressure. For the sake of quicker and better results from this lesson, you should try to completely envelope all of your awareness within this finger and let your subconscious mind control everything else. Isn’t it wonderful that your subconscious is already very proficient in that area? |
Now press the three fleshy pads of this finger so that you can heighten your awareness of how much pressure you could apply if your brain tissue was actually in there. This is your new swing regulator and it’s going to help produce better and more consistent shots. Used properly, it will create results beyond your expectations. You should now use this centered awareness for feedback that will change your game forever. Be that putting, chipping, pitching, sand shots or the full swing. |
O.K. it's time to swing a club. During these swings judge the feedback that’s coming from your new swing regulator (mind finger). Starting with a practice swing and then with the ball. You should give a score from one to ten for the feedback questions that will follow. Just Imagine that you are one of those scoring judges who holds up a card with a number on it. You are going to score this feedback on many different aspects and later compare them to earlier scores. |
During these swings you should be asking some FAQ's (feedback awareness questions): It is at this point that new students of this page face their main hurdle because although they have tried to achieve 100% feedback from this finger, they usually report the following: |
When I am asking for this feedback during a personal lesson, I am told about a thousand different things that I didn't ask for and my students are rarely able to tell me what the mind finger felt. Sometimes they feel so embarrassed about their lack of awareness for this feedback, they start to give me a number to shut me up. |
Let's take an angler as an example for a similar exercise. He drops a fishing line into deep water, perhaps 150 feet down or more. He then takes a slack piece of line between his thumb and fingers. With these fingers he can feel the delicate nibbles from the fish below. He also feels the water’s current and can tell the difference between the jerky nibbles and the smooth flowing current. This is the angler’s regulator and it helps him know when to pull on the line. Anglers have no trouble activating this regulator and without concentrating too hard, have great alertness and a high level of awareness. It is therefore imperative for the golfer to silence any conscious interruptions that cause his lapses in concentration. He must get over this hurdle if he is going to reap the benefits from this lesson. |
So stop letting your conscious awareness wander out of this finger and simply feel only what happens to it during the swing. Are you ready to start again? Well get those number cards ready. A typical novice to this lesson would score his first practice session something like this: the practice swing was an 8, and with the ball a 4. The next swing gets a 7, ball a 4. Then a 9, and ball a 5, next a 7, and with the ball a 3 and so on. These numbers should just roll off the tongue if the awareness in this mind finger is 100%. |
At first, with the practice swing you will achieve a much higher score, which will vary but in general will stay in this higher level. This is of course not so with the ball, with which you will achieve a considerably lower score. But do you understand why? Of course you do. It’s much easier with the practice swing but when it comes to the ball you’ve got something to hit. There unfortunately lies the problem being faced by all levels of golfers every day. Most golfers don’t fully relate to one important dynamic of the golf club. |

Welcome back again! Here some more FAQ's(feedback awareness questions) that you should find useful:
Is the finger feeling much less pressure with the practice swing? |
For those of you who aren’t getting the feedback from the ring finger, could you make small adjustments in your grip, which would allow this to happen? To elaborate on the feedback/feelings you may be getting from these awareness exercises, I suggest some of the following: Rough or smooth, strained or effortless, hard or soft, tight or loose, heavy or light, unsteady or balanced. There are of course more but for this lesson I would summarise them all by putting them into the category, Jerky or Flowing.A score of five or less would fall more into the jerky category, six or more, flowing.
Keep swinging, keep feeling, keep scoring. |
OK, now for some more FAQ's: How are your feedback scores now?
That will be it exactly.Your conscious mind keeps jumping out of that finger into other parts of your body or even worst trying to direct your subconscious/swinging mind. I bet you’ve even forgot to feel the club sole whipping the ground.
In his book, “The Inner Game of Golf”, Gallwey suggests to a pupil before a coaching session, “Forget everything you think you know about how to hit a golf ball.”
What does that mean?
Allow me to explain it with this example. Take out one of your golf clubs, I like to use a heavier lofted iron for this, and throw it as far as you can, out onto the driving range. For safety reasons I would only do this when no one else is there and I could retrieve it again without too much trouble. |
Two questions before you throw it: Do you consciously have to consider some of the mechanics needed to perform this feat, or do you just throw it?
O.K. having thrown the club, One last question before you continue with your mind finger exercise: "Could you now forget everything you think you know about how to throw a club or better still, how to hit a golf ball?" |

Welcome back, I hope you enjoyed this drill.
By now you should have grasped what the main message is from 'The Best Golf Lesson in the World.' Your conscious mind should be 100% locked into this finger for these awareness exercises and the subconscious mind should be left to perform any mechanics, which we agree, function best from this part of the brain anyway. |
This is of course the main hurdle that was mentioned earlier, where your conscious ego wants to comment on some aspect of the mechanics during a swing. Gallwey refers to this as ‘self 1’ (the conscious mind) trying to control ‘self 2’ (the subconscious). But ‘self 2’ doesn’t respond well to vocal commands as it functions better with thoughts, pictures and neural connections. It also doesn’t need any directions from an interfering coach, (self 1), who doesn’t have the slightest idea what ‘self 2’ is capable of or indeed how it can possibly help. You are now better primed to return to the finger awareness exercise and this time, keep ‘self 1’ busy with fixed concentration inside its new home, the mind finger. In other words, allow 'self 2' to perform its magic without conscious interference. |
We've now covered the whole lesson and all you have to do is, go to the range and practice swinging with self 2. Lock self 1 inside the finger and make sure you receive 100% feedback for what it is feeling. You will experience great results and the next step is to bring the same 'mindless golf' onto the course. You should of course use the same finger awareness exercise with every shot. You are probably aware that I have given no swing tips whatsoever during this lesson. Nothing about improving your stance, steepening your swing plane, improving your grip or any of the thousands of tips you have heard many times before. |
Well how could I? That would involve 'self 1' and we don't want to be doing that. We have already learned that it is better that way anyway. I have taken total beginners, using this lesson, to a very recommendable swing and game, and have used no complicated instructions regarding swing mechanics. Don't forget, for instinctive activities like running, jumping, swimming, climbing etc, we get to very capable levels without thinking through the mechanics. |
