That elusive swing arc.
It was now important to use this swing arc exercise to allow my (baseball) student to enter the highest learning zone possible. I was now in my home territory as a coach and proceeded to heighten his concentration and awareness skills.
You can also work on this exercise using the following directions.
Take your stance with a golf club and just like a baseball batter, hover it about 8-12" over the ball. Now look out towards an imaginery pitcher and feel yourself getting ready for a powerful swing.
When you feel ready draw the club back and concentrate only on whether your club head flashes through the arc between 8-12" above the ball.
Did you see this arc?
How long was it?
Was it crystal clear?
Was it higher or lower than you expected?
And most importantly, could you still see this split second visual in your mind's eye after your swing was complete?
With a good visual you should be able to answer all these questions quite easily. When you feel your visuals for these arcs are clear, you are ready to try the same concentration and awareness exercise with the ball.
Once again do not get caught up with swing mechanis or results at the moment. Just let you eyes report back what it is that they filmed.
You will be quite surprised how easy this exercise is when you are swinging in mid-air. How it is a little blurrier when the arc whips the grass without a ball. And then how your eyes totally lose focus with the ball.
Don't worry if you can't see the arc with the ball, just noticing that you are not seeing it is a huge step forward.
Watch your partners performing this swing arc and note how clear your visuals are as an onlooker. Train your eyes to see this arc and you will begin to be much more aware of it.
With a little practice you will get to see this swing arc clearer and clearer and eventually you will automate this awareness and it will become intuitive.
When that happens you will be well on your way to playing the golf of your dreams and in the peaceful state of total serenity.
